What exactly is Destroy Rockcity all about:

it's hasn't really been about anything specific. it started as a comic zine thing given away at some punky house shows in north carolina (dick st. summer of 94!). it just migrated to the web and has basically been a creative outlet over the last few years (when i manage to update it). it's kinda taken a weird turn lately, been spinning alot personal shit into the ideas behind some of the new pieces. who knows... but it's pretty much moment to moment. and i'm feeling much better about it's progress as of late. the name destroy rockcity is sort of a hybrid of the bad brain's "destroy babylon" and kiss's "detroit rock city" but that in itself doesn't mean anything either. i'm a freak, i know.

What do you hope to achieve with the site:

i just hope to keep it updated more often. trying to be more proactive at producing new work. i really want to start injecting more stories into the site. possibly give some of these characters more life. maybe a serialization would be cool. i just gotta blow it out more.

Your animation style is amazingly rich and vibrant how did this style develop:

i've always done a lot of drawing, illustration etc. and began scanning some line drawings into photoshop and adding color and graphics. i guess the fact of building alot of the color etc. in photoshop has really driven the current direction. lately i've been adding alot more photography for texture. it makes getting a rich, juicy image much easier. i can be way slack sometimes. and honestly, if you look at a lot of my work, it's not animation heavy. blinking eyes and shit floating around. i'm trying to beef up the animation though. i need to take it further. i really love what james at presstube is doing. the way he's breathing life into his sketches. amazing and inspiring.

You use Flash with your works in quite a unique style (different to the vector based animations we see all over the web), is this because you find your illustrations difficult to smoothly animate:

yeah i want my stuff to have more life but it's a tough battle between creating a lush image and then making it move. it would become a real chore to try and fully animate some of the stuff i do. i'd love to really bring it to that next level, but it would probably just get too involved and i would certainly tire of it. my mind quickly moves on to new stuff so i tend to float

from one project to the next. lots of stuff i've done in past has never seen the light of day. i have some personal issues i guess. been thinking of posting my failed projects.

Have you ever made motion animations in your style:

well, if you mean broadcast style motion via video or whatever, not really. it's something i really, really want to try with destroy. i've done a bit of after effects work in the past and i need to get back to it. i'd love to have one of my characters fully realized in complete lush motion and not be constrained by bandwidth or processor speeds.

Your design and use of Flash is excellent, do you work as an illustrator or a designer:
i've always worked as a designer (graphic/interactive). never could get myself to try the illustration route (even though i went to school for drawing/illustration). it's tough enough for me to just produce something for myself, can't even comprehend the hell it would be to illustrate for clients (i've tried, not fun at all). but i like the design thing pretty much as long as it's tied to interactive work. it's become much more interesting now that im working with my friends at one9ine. it's too good to be true most of the time.

What do you know about Australian design/designers:

i really don't know that much actually. i love the sites i've seen so far. design is kinky of course! australian infront. love love love elephant cloud. waiting anxiously for more from emme. the ottergirl stuff is so beautiful.i'd love to come to australia to hang out with some australian designers... are there any floors i can crash on?

Do you have any new projects coming up soon that you can tell us about:
well, i've sorta had superteamup.com in my pocket for a year, not really knowing what i wanted to achieve. i knew it would be a collaboration site. i think i've gotten a handle on how it will develop. it should be launching soon. maybe. hopefully... actually, i don't really know when it'll happen. you can also see some of my work on the codexSeries2 cdrom. i had a lot of fun working on that project. even got to feature some music from an old band i was in.

What can we expect to see from Destroy Rockcity in the future:

just more shit i hope. i've been thinking of doing another print issue of destroy. kinda pay homage to it's origins as a zine. maybe a set of character cards or a big ass poster too.
i also gotta do tshirts. i need something new to wear.

Any final comments:

hmmm... not really. can't really think of what i might say here. it should be something smart or profound. but alas, i am neither.

note: thanks to josh davis for a lil bit of code for the cover piece. font is GIA by patric king
