Mac or PC:
fruit and fruit only the only time i use the "gates from hell"
is when i have to test stuff
Site(s):
personal: mwg.com.au
Explain a little bit about the purpose behind mwg.com.au:
free serverspace with out a popup advertisement. it delivers personal
experiences using flash/gif/html/java script
What kind of plans do you have for the site in the future:
fuck knows. i have just updated so i hope to be able to just place in
features as i find the time to make them. the navigation is scalable.
presently it is using the action scripting features of flash four and
there is a little line of code the says "divide (/) by 3".
when i have more stuff up i can change this to "multiply (*) by
3 which will allow for 3 times the amout of features presently showing.
You seem to use Flash almost exclusively, what drew you to Flash:
vector technology... tiny file size and being able to embed fonts that
i like into web content... then there is the motion part... animation
along with sound. that was what did it for me. being able to move graphics
in relation to a sound atmosphere. the basics of any motion graphics.
There are only a few people at the moment who make consistently good
Flash designs, and you happen to be one of them, why do you think Flash
seems to have this limited talent pool:
firstly thank you for the compliment. flash design comes at a cost...
a personal life... and luckily i have the most amazing fiancee that
understands [as i write this it is 2:38 am saturday night... she is
exhurting the character "z" in champion gothic heavyweight
on repeat]. the problem with flash is that any dick wad can buy/dowload
and move things with tween/shape motion features. many will argue but
flash is so easy to learn but a bastard to master. with that availability
to the masses, there is no filter to who uses flash and the majority
of users have no design background let alone any skill or an eye for
motion.
From examples on your site I see that you have worked with some major
clients such as Nike and MTV, do you enjoy commercial work:
like all of us, commercial work delivers currency. currency feeds the
mouth and pays the bills but it is rare to be in a position where the
"work" word is used, and the "happy" word follows.
that is where i am positioned now. br is a company that sells on their
internal talent to clients, which allowed us to gather a client base
that is impressed with what we have to offer. the clients we gain want
"br" style of delivery on the end product. br hired me after
viewing mwg.com.au site so they want that feel to the commercial work.
in other words yes... but a client will always be a client... if you
know what i mean
You have mentioned to me that you don't really like the whole design
'e-zine' thing, what is it you don't like and where do you think we
went wrong:
i am seeing them evolve now so i don't exactly think i "don't like
them". it is more i would like them to become an online exibition.
like a fashion magazine is for a designer. new features developed for
the individual zine released, maybe a little bit more extensive than
a flat psd file. i also think the interviews should be tailored to the
individual designer.
What do you think about the state of, and standard of, Australian design:
far removed from where the cash is so in some ways it is hard to judge.
there is some amazing talent but i think that the main problem in australia
is the clients unwillingness to push the envelope. i did encounter some
cases of it whilst there but it is rare.. unlike being here at br.
[Standard boring question] Favourite sites:
standard boring answer... www.etoys.com
Any final comments:
1. here is the flash
file... fonts used universe ultra condensed light and universe light..
don't use the sound... it's not yours
2. if you can get it to work on i.e. 4.5 on a mac, your job is complete.
3. kern your characters, lazy shits! [thats of course if you know why
to]
Thanks Matt!
