Name:
shaun kardinal

Age:

seventeen

Location:

tracy, california... northern central cal

Mac or PC:

pc... i used to have a mac, but it was before they got decent, so we got the pc... i need to get back into the mac scene though cause i hear that's what most companies use... then again, if i'm at home, who cares...

Site(s):

enamel : http://www.lockjaw.net/shaun/ : my personal thang, it's basically a flashy journal with a new splash every few days, for now...
lockjaw : http://www.lockjaw.net/ : design team

The Boss:

nik : head of lockjaw by day : pimp by night, oh who'm i kidding, he's pimpin it all day.

Design education:

none... i'm going to have a design class next year... the course description included photoshop, illustrator, and pagemaker... i've never used illustrator so i thought it'd be a good thing...i hope it doesn't suck... "here, kids, is a 'mouse'... when you move the 'mouse', the 'cursor' as we like to call it moves invariably with it along the screen..."

Hunk, spunk or flunk:

i'm not a hunk.. but i really couldn't tell you what a spunk or flunk was... i've never failed a class, so im gonna go with spunk.. yeah. that works...

Disgusting personal habits:

i watch total request live.

Nice personal habits:

i try to do what will make other people happy even if it means personal sacrifice.. if i have respect for that person, that is...

Hobbies off the net:

movies movies movies... im at the theatre a good four times a week... and working at blockbuster, i get five free rentals a week... so i rent a lotof flicks too... i love driving around with friends listening to music and singing...

Favourite quote:

"can i get a what what? can i get a whoop whoop?"

What do you know about Australian web designers:

i know they exist... this question sort of eludes me because i've always felt that location was one of the few things that really didn't matter in the field of web design... world wide web... it doesn't matter if you are from australia, norway, tracy california, lithuania, whatever... if you know some html, and you can make a graphic or two, hell, call yourself a designer... no matter where you are, unless you have some deep seeded pride for your country, and you insist on putting a maple leaf on everything you make, than you can design something exactly the same as another person somewhere else... it is entirely possible for two people to design the same exact thing... improbable... but possible...

How did you first learn of the internet:

i don't really remember, i think i saw something about yahoo! on the news... i got the net in february of ninety seven... started designing with paint shop pro and very basic html summer of the same year...

What do you like/hate about the net:

like: basically what i just said above... pretty much anyone can create something... a lot of people i know feel the exact opposite... that "anyone and everyone calls themself a designer"... well who cares... if they call themselves designers, than they must be designing something... maybe it's not up to your particular standards, but isn't that just being a little harsh... im sure at one point even cedric dewulf and dustin vannatter and every ninety percent of the designers we've heard of started out with a little page of graphics taken from other sites, copied html, and java applets that took too long to load... but we didn't care, it was all new to us... it was an adventure.. and it still is... everytime i load netscape, i have a feeling of anticipation... because i don't know exactly what i'm going to see today.

hate: downloading. im on a 33.6, and it's pretty much becoming the ancients of the modems. oh well... i can't complain, because i am an anal cache clearer... if i see go to a page that has a cool lowsrc to src transition, i'll clear my cache and reload it... its fun...

What drew you to web design:

i've considered myself an artist for a few years.. of all mediums (that i've tried).. after being on the net for a while, i started wondering about all those "your own free homepage" banners... i found angelfire... with my 35k of space, and my netscape 1 browser, i would conquer the internet... or at least show my mom or something... i got a new computer, learned every html tag i could, and got paint shop pro... i marveled as i watched the day counter go much farther than the thirty day limit... a friend of mine, i knew him as waxx at the time, started desiging stuff that blew me away... soon enough, i had my own copy of photoshop and i would try my hand at designing... i designed for friends and family, and myself... it was wonderful...

What is your working style (Photoshop, etc):

-photoshop 4: layer options are the tools of the gods
-editpad: great program, i recommend it, much like notepad but can open multiple files..
-pagemaker 6.5: i scored it for three dollars at goodwill, someone left it in an ace of base cd case...
-netscape 4.5: only the location bar, i am a true space freak with my browser

Do you think that Flash is cool or overused:
if used well, it's it's freakin wonderful... but i rarely see it used well...

Do you prefer technologically advanced sites or sites with simple but good design?
if it looks good, loads relatively fast, and has decent content, im there... but if it doesn't look good, i probably won't go back... i know it's harsh, but i can't help it...

Do you have any cool design tips:

never link a file over 101k in an html file... i'll be forced to go nutty...

Favourite sites:

-lockjaw.net : free plug
-suffocate.org : not only am i a member, i'm a huge fan
-k10k.net : just go, you'll see why.
-c3dric.com : cedric is the shit
-ziggen.com : rad design

Favourite designers: (Web or otherwise)

jerry chan, he has been a mentor for many a year... cedric dewulf is my favorite at the moment... john machielson, steve chaya, ed samour... jeez, too many to list... everyone who has a site in my /badarse folder in my bookmarks..

Design styles you hate:

those guys who have a site that is basically just a flashy journal, and they make a new splash page every few days... what are they thinking..

Do you think web designers will become the design elite:

i certainly hope not, i do feel we should be given more credit, but we shouldn't become elite... equality is what im after...

Do you see yourself as an influential web designer:

only to a few friends, cause i help them with html, but other than that, i doubt i've ever inspired anyone...

How would you like to be remembered:

"that guy... y'know, had a website..."

Any final comments:

love is all you need.
thanks for letting me be a part of this...
enjoy life.

Thanks Shaun!
